CLASS 1 – EXPLOSIVES
Their stowage should be done from the personnel location and from the hull at a point just below the hatches.
It includes the following
Black powder, cartridges, smoke grenades, ammunition, dynamite, etc.
CLASS 2 – GASES
CLASS 2.1
FLAMMABLE GAS : It should be stored out of the reach of any heat source and away from personnel.
Includes the following
Acetylene, Ethane, Ethylene, Methane, Hydrogen, Butane, etc.
CLASS 2.2
TOXIC GAS : It should be stored away from any heat source, personnel and foodstuffs.
Contains the following:
Ammonia, Fluorine, Prussic Acid, Chlorite, Carbon monoxide etc.
CLASS 2.3
NON-FLAMMABLE COMPRESSED GAS : They should be kept on or below deck in well ventilated cool places. Cylinders filled with these gases expand upon heat extraction and become very dangerous as they can cause an explosion.
It includes the following:
Argon, Helium, carbon dioxide, Coal gas, oxygen, etc.
CLASS 3 – FLAMMABLE LIQUID
They are divided into 3 groups depending on the combustion point of the gas vaporized upon heating.
CLASS 3.1
GASOLINE : Burning point less than 180°C. Should always be stored above deck.
CLASS 3.2
DIESEL : Burn point between 180 and 230°C. Should be stored above or below deck.
CLASS 3.3
DIESEL : Burning point between 230 and 610°C. Should be stored under deck.
CLASS 4 – GASES
CLASS 4.1
FLAMMABLE SOLID : Should be stored above or below deck. Should be kept away from living areas.
Contains the following:
Aluminum powder, celluloid, naphthalene, red phosphorus, films, turpentine oil, dry fibers, etc.
CLASS 4.2
SPONTENOUSLY COMBUSTIBLE : It should be stored in well-ventilated areas; the space between stocks should be designed to allow air circulation.
Includes the following
Copra, fish meal, feed, charcoal, etc.
CLASS 4.3
DANGEROUS WHEN WET : Flammable solids when wet or in contact with water. Should be stored in dry, well-ventilated areas; contact with water should be avoided.
Includes the following:
Alkaline alloys, barium, carbide, ferrosilicon, natrium, magnesium etc.
CLASS 5 – OXIDIZİNG SUBSTANCES
CLASS 5.1
OXIDIZING AGENT : These agents release oxygen and thus facilitate inflammation. Therefore, they should not be stored together with flammable substances.
This includes the following:
Nitrate, fertilizer, ammonium sulphate, barium chlorate, etc.
CLASS 5.2
ORGANIC PEROXIDE : These substances may be flammable or explosive. They should be stored in dry and cool conditions on deck with a lid.
Includes the following:
All peroxides are in this group.
CLASS 6 – TOXIC
CLASS 6.1
TOXIC : Toxic substances can enter the human body through the mouth and can kill a person. Therefore, they should be stored away from food, beverages, living spaces and moisture emitting materials such as tobacco.
It contains the following:
Arsenic, Aniline, Barium oxide, Phenol, Nicotine, Lead, Cyanide, mercury products etc.
CLASS 6.2
INFECTIOUS SUBSTANCE : These substances cause disease due to their germ content. They should be stored away from food, drink and living areas. In case of danger, contact the nearest health authority.
Includes the following:
Bones, bone fat, compressed meat waste, hides, blood meal, etc.
CLASS 7 – RADIOACTIVE
These substances are transported in special containers. The containers must be undamaged. Preferably, they should be stored on deck, away from the personnel area, foodstuffs, undeveloped films, medicines and chemicals. They are divided into 3 groups depending on the degree of activity.
